CHAPTER SIX

Date: March 15th

Temperature: -12°C

Hours of sunlight: 13.0

THE WEATHER HAD closed in again but Sophie didn’t mind being cooped up inside. She’d had a couple of outdoor experiences and, while one had been far more relaxed than the other, both had left her exhausted. It was hard work, being outside in this climate. The conditions were much harsher than she’d anticipated and it required a lot of concentration to stay focussed. Indoor tasks were far more familiar to her and came much more naturally. She felt as though she had things under control while she was inside.

She’d been busy for the past couple of days, so busy that she’d even had a day when she hadn’t thought about Danny, but she’d refused to feel guilty about it, which made a pleasant change. Maybe coming to the ice would be the cure she was hoping for. Maybe she would be okay.

Along with routine medical care she also needed to schedule a series of health screenings for a few of the crazier expeditioners who were planning on taking part in an outdoor swim—the annual April Fools’ Day swim. Sophie couldn’t understand what the attraction was in stripping down to a pair of swimmers and jumping into water that was near freezing, neither could she believe that this activity was actually on the station calendar and sanctioned by the AAP, but part of her role in occupational heath and safety meant she had to do health checks on anyone who was planning to participate.

The health checks were relatively straightforward and required her to check general fitness and heart function. There were a dozen expeditioners who had signed up, all men, not surprisingly—women had more sense—and Sophie needed to get started on their checks. Some had made an appointment to see her, others, including Gabe, hadn’t as yet.

She sent a reminder email to those who hadn’t booked in. To Gabe’s she added a note that she’d heard from Dr John, hoping that would encourage him to come and see her. She’d been too busy to think about Danny but not too busy to notice that she hadn’t crossed paths with Gabe for a day or two and she’d missed his company. She hadn’t yet got to know many people, the crew on the station were busy with their own jobs and her role was relatively independent, broken only by brief periods when she needed to see a patient, but there was no one on her team as such. Alex, Dom, Finn and Gabe were the only ones she’d formed any sort of connection with and she felt most comfortable with Gabe. She liked him and she liked the way he made her feel. Just seeing him could make her smile. He made her feel happy.

Her email worked. Within half an hour Gabe stuck his head into the clinic.

‘Hey, Doc.’ His greeting was relaxed, no explanation as to why he was there or whether he’d even seen her email.

‘Hi. Have you come for your medical
